SUMMARY:Beginner's Ride
DESCRIPTION:There will be two rides. A 22-mile route will start at Smith’s Bike Shop at 6:00 (please plan on a speeds of 14-19 mph). A 15-mile route will start at Kwik Trip (319 S 3rd St\, La Crescent\, MN 55947) at 6:00. Since this ride is a little longer than our previous rides\, it might be better for the people on hybrids to stick to the 15-mile route. Most of this ride will be on a trail alongside the Mississippi River. There is a large shoulder on the highway to and from the trail. See the pictures in the discussion for tips/warnings about a couple intersections. \nRoute: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27601765 \n**Highly recommend sunglasses or eye wear. There are a lot of gnats on the trail.\n***Make sure you have water with you. Wear sunscreen if you are sensitive to the sun because there is minimal shade. \n  \nOn the way out\, this is the end of the trail\, which will put us on a frontage road by Dresbach. If you can see the end of the road in this picture\, that is where we will merge onto the frontage road and traffic coming off of the interstate also merges at the same point. We will make sure to stay on the far right of the road. There isn’t much traffic that takes that exit\, but when it comes through\, it is coming pretty fast. \n\nOn the way out\, this is the end of the trail\, which will put us on a frontage road by Dresbach. If you can see the end of the road in this picture\, that is where we will merge onto the frontage road and traffic coming off of the interstate also merges at the same point. We will make sure to stay on the far right of the road. There isn’t much traffic that takes that exit\, but when it comes through\, it is coming pretty fast. \n\nThe park is on the corner of River St and Center St. \n\nOn the way back\, this is the view getting back on the trail. See where Tim is under the sign\, if you go straight through there\, you will meet up with the trail. See the road that goes uphill a little? That is an off ramp from the interstate where traffic will be coming quickly at us. Before we get to this point\, we will safely cross the road to the left to get onto the trail. We should try to cross before we get to the sign Tim is waiting under. \n\nAt the end of the trail on the way back\, we will see this sign. It is pointing us to a trail that goes under the interstate\, then takes us over a pedestrian bridge to cross over to the other side of the interstate to hit the highway again. \n\nThis is a view right after the pedestrian bridge. At the end of this trail\, we will be back on the highway where cars will be traveling around 70 mph. We will have a wide shoulder. I just want you all aware that we will be merging with traffic.

SUMMARY:2018 Ridin' for Rhizokids (Virtual Event & Fundraiser)
DESCRIPTION:Ridin’ for RhizoKids is a 10 day 100 mile virtual bicycle ride. The challenge is to ride 100 miles in 10 days on a road bike\, mountain bike\, stationary bike\, Peloton\, trainer\, or even a motorcycle. We also have swimmers\, walkers\, runners\, rowers\, and others doing 100 minute workouts. This fundraiser is to help raise awareness for Rhizomelic Chondrodysplasia Punctata (RCDP) and money for upcoming clinical trials and fund research for these sweet children. \nThe cost is $40 which goes directly to RhizoKids International a 501(c)3\, tax deductible and you receive a “cool” t-shirt.  The event goes from May 25th-June 3rd and can be done in any time frame. \nRegister online at www.ridinforrhizokids.com from January 1- May 1. \n\nRhizomelic Chondrodysplasia Punctata (RCDP) is a rare\, terminal metabolic genetic disorder that affects children and is present at birth. It is a form of dwarfism that causes many disabilities\, including: severe developmental delays\, cataracts\, seizures\, limited range of motion and a short lifespan. Children with RCDP have poor nutrition\, resulting in limited growth. In addition to the severe disabilities the condition produces\, these children have small rib cages. This makes it necessary to avoid respiratory infections\, as they can compromise their breathing. \nMany children with RCDP will never walk or talk\, however they are joyful additions to their families because most spend their day laughing and smiling. \nRCDP refers to the unique bone structure present in these children. Rhizomelic refers to the shortening of the upper arms and legs. Chondrodysplasia punctata refers to punctate areas of calcium in the growth plates. Many of the children with RCDP remain near infant size their entire life. \nRCDP is such a rare disorder that there are believed to be around 75 cases worldwide at this time. Most families are given a very grim life expectancy for their RCDP child. 25% earn their wings during the neonatal period\, 50% earn their wings before age 5 and 25% living past age 5 are labeled “long term survivors.”
